The US bombings of North Vietnam were started in response to claimed unprovoked attacks on a US destroyer in the Gulf of Tonkin on August 2nd 1964. The truth was that the destroyer was engaged in aggressive intelligence-gathering maneuvers, but this didn't come out fully until some documents were declassified 30 years later

But President Johnson lied to the US people and started a war against North Vietnam based on an attack on a US ship that was largely or entirely a fabrication. With the 2003 invasion of Iraq being based on lies about Weapons of Mass Destruction it seems that not much has changed in 30 years. source
